Although concrete is quite strong once it dries, it often develops small cracks during the process of drying. Rather than allowing random cracking in the concrete, straight lines (expansion joints) are created to allow for cracking to be more aesthetically pleasing. Once the concrete workers have completed the flatwork, they apply a coating to the sides of the foundation to smooth and improve the appearance. In some cases, if the side of the foundation is very uneven, fragments of concrete are chipped off to make the sides more even before the coating is applied.
